A.W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowships

The A.W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship Program in the Humanities at UW-Madison is an interdisciplinary program providing postdoctoral fellowships in the humanities and humanistic social sciences. The program began in August, 2010 and builds upon well-established interdisciplinary initiatives on campus exploring in a variety of ways the broad question, "What is human?" These initiatives have been examining the transnational circulations of culture and power on a global landscape, questions of biocultures and biopolitics, and new ways of thinking about media in the context of the digital revolution. Each year the Mellon Postdoctoral Program focuses on a theme related to these initiatives. Themes to date have been World Citizenship (2010-2011), Life (2011-2012), and Media (2012-2013). The theme for 2013-2014 is Democracy.

The Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship Program invites three new fellows each year to UW-Madison for two-year appointments. The program is affiliated with the Center for the Humanities and the Institute for Research in the Humanities, whose directors jointly administer the program with the assistance of the Mellon Coordinator. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellows are members of the Institute for Research in the Humanities and are also affiliated with a department in the College of Letters and Science. They have offices in 432 East Campus Mall, the home of the Center for the Humanities and the Institute for Research in the Humanities. Fellows have access to UW-Madison's world-class libraries and all other campus facilities.

Mellon Postdoctoral Fellows are encouraged to join in all aspects of intellectual life on campus and are given ample time and support to develop their research. They also teach one course related to their field of research each semester for their department. The departments also provide a faculty mentor in their field who provides guidance in the fellow's career development. Under the direction of a Lead Mentor, the fellows and their mentors participate in a yearlong seminar with monthly meetings where fellows present their work and engage with outside speakers. In conjunction with their mentors, fellows host a scholar in their field who reads selected work by the hosting fellow, meets with the Mellon seminar, and gives a public lecture.

Mellon Postdoctoral Fellows are invited to participate in any of the campus's many conferences, lectures, seminars, workshops, and other events sponsored by the Center for the Humanities and the Insitute for Research in the Humanities. (See irh.wisc.edu and www.humanities.wisc.edu for Institute and Center programs and events.) As members of the Institute, fellows are welcome as time and interest permit to attend the Institute's weekly Monday seminars (3:00P.M. - 5:00P.M.) and Tuesday follow-up lunch seminars (noon - 1:15P.M.) and to join the stimulating community of fellows for ongoing informal exchanges.
