Support the Institute

We invite you to join us at our events. We especially want to invite past fellows to keep in touch with the Institute, let us know how your research is going, and contribute copies of your work to our library, especially work you did while at the Institute.

The Institute’s dynamic weekly seminars are our “collaboratory,” the space where fellows present their research and face intense interdisciplinary discussion with scholars from many different disciplines across the humanities. The Institute sponsors about 40-45 fellows each year, from UW-Madison, the UW-System campuses, and universities and colleges all over the world. Stipendary and non-stipendary fellowships are offered in all areas of the humanities, encouraging research that asks large questions of human history, culture, ideas, literature, language, and the arts. Four theme-based fellowship programs at IRH include 4-5 external Solmsen Fellowships for projects on pre-1700 Europe; 1-2 Kingdon fellowships on Judeo-Christian religious traditions; 6 external Mellon Post-Doctoral Fellowships based in annual themes; and 3 internal Race, Ethnicity, and Indigeneity Fellowships.

The Institute houses seminar rooms, a library that includes publications of former fellows, and office space to encourage informal and formal exchanges among fellows at our daily brownbag lunches and other events. We sponsor many interdisciplinary events, such as the Burdick-Vary Symposia, lectures, workshops on grant writing and publication. All seminars and events are open to interested faculty, students, and members of the public. The Institute also collaborates with the Center for the Humanities on such programs as the Faculty Development Seminar and the Focus on the Humanities Distinguished Lectures.
