Simon P. Newman, IRH Honorary Fellow and Solmsen Fellow (2019-2020), has been selected as one of the visiting scholars at the Charles Warren Center for Studies in American History at Harvard University for 2021-2022. This year, the Warren Center’s research theme is “Slavery and the Universities,” timed in part to coincide with the release of Harvard’s own forthcoming report into its own tangled relationship with historical slavery. Newman’s project explores the significance of popular dissemination of academic research into slavery, and how this is both a foundation and a result of British universities’ exploration of their slavery past. Newman is focused on how cultural productions (fiction, plays, movies, poetry, music, art) based on this research are helping reshape British popular understandings of slavery’s presence in and significance for British history.
