Matthew Rarey, (Dana-Allen Dissertation Fellow, 2013-2014), who is currently an Associate Professor of Art History at Oberlin College, won the 2024 Charles Rufus Morey Book Award for his first book, Insignificant Things: Amulets and the Art of Survival in the Early Black Atlantic. His research focuses on the survival amulets crafted by enslaved Africans in the 1700s, exploring their profound significance and the hidden histories they represent.
